Convert a 401(k) to Gold: Rules & Steps (2026)
To convert a 401(k) to gold, first establish that your employer plan can make an eligible rollover distribution. A receiving IRA does not create access to a current employer’s plan. Pretax savings and designated Roth savings also need different receiving registrations and separate tax review.
Rules to check
| Check | Rule / published terms |
|---|---|
| Plan-to-IRA route | Direct rollover of an eligible distribution Ask the administrator to pay the receiving IRA rather than you personally. Pretax and designated Roth amounts have different permitted destinations. IRS source· as of |
| Distribution eligibility | The plan’s terms control access Separation from employment is a common distribution event. An in-service distribution is not automatically available simply because a receiving IRA is open. IRS source· as of |
| If the plan pays you | 60 days; generally 20% withholding Replacing the withheld portion with other funds may be necessary to roll over the full gross eligible distribution. Direct rollovers avoid this mandatory withholding. IRS source· as of |
| 2026 employee elective deferrals | $24,500 Plan terms and compensation can restrict the actual amount. Catch-up contributions have separate eligibility and limits; these figures do not cap an eligible rollover. IRS source· as of |
| Plan withdrawal exception | Separation in or after the year of age 55 This exception can apply to qualifying plan distributions, but not later withdrawals from an IRA. A move can change which early-distribution exceptions are available. IRS source· as of |
| Pretax plan RMD | Possible retirement delay under plan rules Certain business owners cannot use the still-working delay. Once assets are in a traditional IRA, IRA RMD rules apply; RMD amounts cannot be rolled over. IRS source· as of |
How it works for this account
Request the distribution options
Ask the administrator whether separation from service or another event permits the requested payment. Obtain the plan’s rollover explanation and confirm that the proposed amount excludes ineligible payments such as required distributions or hardship withdrawals.
IRS source· as ofIdentify each tax source
Have the administrator separate pretax, designated Roth and any after-tax amounts. Confirm the intended IRA destination for each source; do not assume that every dollar on the statement belongs in a traditional IRA.
IRS source· as ofOpen the receiving account
Confirm that the custodian accepts the rollover and can administer permitted physical metal. Get the receiving payee name, account number and delivery instructions directly from the custodian before submitting the plan election.
IRS source· as ofElect the direct rollover
Ask the plan to pay the receiving trustee for your benefit. A check can still qualify as direct when payable to the IRA trustee, even if you forward it; a check payable personally to you has different withholding consequences.
IRS source· as ofReconcile and then authorize purchases
Compare the plan’s distribution record with the IRA receipt, preserve tax reporting documents and review the actual metal quote. Confirm storage and future distribution access before committing the transferred cash to bullion.

401(k) to gold without penalty
A valid pretax-to-traditional IRA rollover normally continues tax deferral without early-distribution tax. That treatment concerns the rollover itself. A qualifying separation from service in or after the year you reach age 55 can allow certain plan withdrawals without the additional early tax, but that exception does not apply to later IRA withdrawals. IRS plan-versus-IRA exceptions should be checked before giving up plan withdrawal access.
Account-specific pitfalls to resolve
Hardship withdrawals and required distributions cannot be made eligible merely by sending them to a custodian. A plan loan requires separate review; a loan deemed distributed and a qualifying loan offset do not necessarily have the same rollover treatment. Employer stock may also need separate tax analysis before liquidation. The 2026 IRS rollover notice discusses these special cases; request the administrator’s explanation that applies to your own payment.
What the change adds and what it costs
A self-directed IRA can give the owner control over permitted metal purchases outside the employer’s investment menu. The move can also replace plan features with dealer, storage and IRA administration charges. Compare leaving savings in the plan, an eligible move to another workplace plan and a partial IRA rollover. Access to physical metal does not establish that relinquishing the plan’s withdrawal options is worthwhile.

401(k) FAQ
Can I move my current employer’s 401(k) to gold?
Only if the plan permits the requested distribution and it is eligible for rollover. An in-service distribution is not automatic; ask the administrator before opening or funding another account.
IRS source· as ofDoes a direct 401(k) rollover require tax withholding?
Federal mandatory withholding does not apply to an eligible direct rollover. An eligible pretax distribution paid to you generally has 20% withholding even when you intend to redeposit it.
IRS source· as ofCan designated Roth 401(k) money enter a traditional IRA?
No. Designated Roth plan money must use a permitted Roth destination. Untaxed pretax money moved to a Roth IRA has different tax consequences.
IRS source· as ofDoes the age-55 exception follow money into an IRA?
No. The qualifying separation-from-service exception for plan payments does not apply to later IRA distributions. An IRA withdrawal needs to qualify under IRA rules.
IRS source· as ofHow long does a direct 401(k) rollover take?
The IRS does not promise a processing duration for your plan and custodian. Confirm the release process with both institutions. The 60-day rule concerns an eligible payment received personally, not a promised service timeline.
