Convert a Solo 401(k) to Gold: Rules & Steps (2026)

To convert a solo 401(k) to gold, distinguish changing investments inside the plan from rolling an eligible distribution into an IRA. Business-owner control does not remove qualified-plan distribution restrictions. This guide covers the IRA route and the owner’s responsibilities when acting for the source plan.

Plan classificationA one-participant qualified plan

The owner acts as both employee and employer. The same core rules apply as for other qualified salary-deferral plans; owner control does not remove distribution restrictions.

Funding an IRADirect rollover of an eligible distribution

Have the administrator identify the payment and permitted tax destination. A pretax-to-Roth rollover generally puts untaxed amounts into income.

IRS source· as of
Indirect rollover timing60 days; generally 20% withholding

A direct rollover avoids mandatory withholding on eligible rollover distributions. Plan-to-IRA rollovers are excluded from the once-per-12-month IRA rollover limit.

IRS source· as of
2026 employee deferral ceiling$24,500

Elective deferrals are limited by person across plans. Holding a job with another employer does not create a separate full employee allowance.

IRS source· as of
2026 total annual additions$72,000, excluding catch-up contributions

The overall limit is distinct from the employee deferral limit. Compensation can impose a lower cap; self-employed owners use adjusted earned income.

Early IRA withdrawal after transferGenerally 10% before age 59½

Plan-specific separation exceptions do not apply to later IRA withdrawals. A valid rollover and a subsequent withdrawal are different transactions.

Owner RMD limitationStill-working delay is restricted for owners

The business-ownership exception can prevent delaying plan RMDs until retirement. A traditional IRA has its own required-distribution rules regardless of continued work.

How it works for this account

  1. Read the adopted plan document

Locate the distribution provisions and confirm which event permits the proposed payment. An owner acting as administrator still needs a documented eligible distribution; signing both sides of the paperwork does not create eligibility.

  2. Reconcile employee and employer records

Separate pretax, designated Roth, after-tax and loan records, where relevant. Confirm that the proposed rollover is existing plan savings rather than a new employee deferral or employer contribution, and exclude any required distribution.

  3. Confirm the receiving IRA and payee

Obtain written acceptance and correct traditional or Roth registration from the metals custodian. Keep source-plan and personal-account instructions distinct, even when the same business owner coordinates all communications.

  4. Document and execute the direct rollover

Retain the administrator’s rollover explanation, payment election and evidence that the trustee is the payee. If an outside plan administrator or recordkeeper is involved, reconcile their records before releasing the eligible amount.

  5. Finish the investment and plan administration

After receipt, review dealer pricing, permitted products and storage before authorizing a purchase. If the source plan is ending, separately address termination and final reporting obligations; an IRA receipt alone does not complete plan closure.

Solo 401(k) to gold without penalty

A valid direct pretax rollover to a traditional IRA normally continues tax deferral. A payment without a permitted distribution event is not repaired by later buying gold. Owner retirement and ownership can also affect required-distribution timing; do not assume that continued work automatically delays a solo-plan RMD. IRS required-distribution FAQs explain the owner restrictions, and IRS qualified-plan distribution rules address eligible access.

Account-specific pitfalls to resolve

Being self-directed does not mean that every plan payment is a rollover. Keep business expenses, retirement assets and personal metal purchases separate. If considering a plan termination, get the administrator’s complete closing requirements rather than treating an emptied investment account as a closed plan. IRS one-participant plan guidance confirms that these plans follow the same core requirements as other salary-deferral plans.

What the change adds and what it costs

An IRA custodian can take over administration of the receiving account and provide access to permitted metal. The business owner may give up plan features while retaining source-plan filing or closing work, and the IRA introduces its own charges. Compare an IRA rollover with retaining the plan under its existing investment provisions. A dealer’s sales process cannot substitute for the owner’s plan-administration responsibilities or establish that the new costs are reasonable.

Solo 401(k) FAQ

Can I move a solo 401(k) whenever I want because I own it?

No. The adopted plan and qualified-plan rules still govern distributions. The IRS describes a one-participant plan as subject to the same core rules as other traditional salary-deferral plans.

IRS source· as of
Is buying gold inside a solo plan an IRA rollover?

No. An investment held by the existing plan remains a plan asset. Funding an IRA requires a separate eligible distribution and rollover to a receiving IRA custodian.

IRS source· as of
Does a solo-plan rollover count as a new business contribution?

No. Moving eligible existing savings is distinct from employee deferrals and employer contributions. It does not create another contribution allowance or business deduction.

IRS source· as of
Can a working owner delay all solo-plan RMDs?

No. Ownership restrictions can prevent the workplace-plan still-working delay. Determine the source-plan requirement separately from the receiving IRA’s rules.

IRS source· as of
Does moving the balance close the solo plan?

A rollover payment is not itself proof that plan termination and reporting are complete. Confirm the applicable closing and final-return requirements with the administrator.
