Convert a SEP IRA to Gold: Rules & Steps (2026)
To convert a SEP IRA to gold, first identify whether the balance is traditional or Roth and whether employer deposits will continue. This guide’s movement examples cover a traditional SEP balance. Changing investments does not change the employer’s contribution obligations or turn a transfer into a deductible business contribution.
Rules to check
| Check | Rule / published terms |
|---|---|
| Traditional SEP funding route | Trustee transfer to a traditional IRA The IRA rules apply to a traditional SEP balance. A pretax SEP-to-Roth movement is a conversion with separate tax consequences, rather than a like-for-like transfer. IRS source· as of |
| Indirect rollover period | 60 days When an eligible SEP distribution is paid to you, the IRA rollover timing requirement applies. A direct transfer does not put that payment in your hands. IRS source· as of |
| 2026 employer SEP contribution | Lesser of 25% of compensation or $72,000 This is an employer contribution ceiling, not a transfer ceiling. A self-employed owner needs the special net-earnings calculation rather than applying the employee rate directly to gross revenue. IRS source· as of |
| Traditional SEP early withdrawal | Generally 10% before age 59½ An exception may apply. Taking cash outside a valid rollover can also create ordinary taxable income; a purchase of gold does not waive these rules. IRS source· as of |
| Traditional SEP RMD | Required under IRA distribution rules The still-working workplace-plan delay does not generally apply to a traditional SEP IRA. An RMD itself is ineligible for rollover. IRS source· as of |
How it works for this account
Separate the SEP plan from the investment account
Locate the employer’s SEP arrangement and the individual IRA statement. Identify whether future deposits are expected. Moving an employee’s existing IRA assets and changing where an employer sends future contributions require separate instructions.
IRS source· as ofConfirm traditional or Roth treatment
Ask the source trustee to identify the account’s tax classification. For a traditional SEP balance, obtain written confirmation that the receiving metals account is traditional unless a deliberate taxable Roth conversion is intended.
IRS source· as ofChoose the destination and transfer scope
Confirm whether the custodian accepts an ongoing SEP arrangement or only an ordinary traditional IRA receiving existing savings. Specify a full or partial trustee transfer and coordinate any sale of source investments within the account.
IRS source· as ofVerify funding and purchase terms
Match the transfer amount to the receiving statement before approving a metal purchase. Ask for the product description, actual dealer price, custody agreement and storage instructions; employer sponsorship does not validate the product.
IRS source· as ofKeep business and personal records distinct
Save transfer evidence separately from employer contribution records. Check future deposit instructions with payroll or the business administrator and confirm how required IRA distributions and ongoing account expenses will be handled.

SEP IRA to gold without penalty
Traditional SEP IRA assets generally follow traditional IRA distribution rules. A permitted trustee transfer to a traditional IRA can preserve deferral without requiring the owner to stop working or close the business. A taxable payment kept outside a valid rollover can face the general additional early tax before age 59½ unless an exception applies. The IRS exceptions table distinguishes IRA exceptions from workplace-plan exceptions.
Account-specific pitfalls to resolve
The employer contribution ceiling is not a ceiling on transferring existing savings. A transfer also does not create another employer deduction. Do not assume an employer’s SEP requires assets to remain at its original financial institution; confirm the account agreement and future deposit process. Self-employed owners should keep the contribution calculation separate from the rollover request. IRS SEP FAQs explain participant account rights and employer responsibilities.
What the change adds and what it costs
Permitted bullion may be available through a receiving self-directed IRA, and a partial transfer can retain another account for ongoing deposits or liquidity. The new arrangement can add fixed administration and storage costs to business retirement savings. Compare these expenses with the source IRA and ask whether the receiving provider can support the employer’s continuing SEP arrangement. A custodian’s willingness to accept a transfer says nothing about the metal’s future value.

SEP IRA FAQ
Do I need to close my business to move a SEP IRA?
Generally no. A SEP IRA is an individual retirement account and its owner can move assets under IRA rules. The employer’s ongoing SEP arrangement and future contributions need separate administration.
IRS source· as ofDoes a SEP transfer count toward the employer contribution ceiling?
No. An eligible movement of existing retirement savings is not a new employer contribution. Keep the transfer documentation separate from records supporting business contributions and deductions.
IRS source· as ofCan my traditional SEP IRA move to a Roth gold IRA?
A permitted traditional-to-Roth movement is a conversion, with untaxed amounts generally included in income. It is not the same tax treatment as moving a traditional SEP balance to a traditional IRA.
IRS source· as ofDoes the IRA rollover frequency rule include SEP IRAs?
Yes. SEP IRAs are included in the owner’s combined once-per-12-month IRA rollover limit. A trustee-to-trustee transfer is outside that restriction.
IRS source· as ofCan I keep receiving employer contributions after moving assets?
Confirm the employer’s SEP agreement and the receiving custodian’s capabilities. Moving an existing balance does not automatically update future deposit instructions or establish a new SEP arrangement.
